Drivers with standard or sticker FasTrak transponders can use the express lanes and pay with FasTrak, but they will pay the full toll regardless of the number of occupants in the vehicle. The Illinois Tollway’s Pay By Plate feature allows you to enter your license plate and payment information up to 14 days after travel to capture your tolls and allow you to avoid fines and fees. Toll-free travel for qualifying carpools and other eligible vehicles is often only available to drivers who have a switchable FasTrak transponder. Sticker transponders can be used to pay tolls on every tolled bridge, lane and road in California. Prior to starting each trip, it is the driver's responsibility to indicate the number of occupants in the vehicle by moving the switch to the appropriate setting (1, 2, 3+).

To be eligible for free or discounted toll rates, drivers need a switchable FasTrak transponders (also called FasTrak Flex ®) that has a small black switch that can be moved to indicate the number of occupants in the vehicle. On some of California’s express lanes, qualifying carpools and other select vehicles are eligible for free or discounted toll rates.
